In most women, blood pressure drops during pregnancy. However, there are a percentage of women who develop hypertension, is known as gestational hypertension. It usually disappears after the baby is born, although it does increase the risk that these women will develop hypertension in the future.

Another type of hypertension is chronic, it affects people with excess weight and a sedentary life and is already suffered before becoming pregnant. Both chronic and gestational hypertension can lead to pre-eclampsia.

Preeclampsia manifests itself in pregnant women with clear symptoms such as:

- Increase in blood pressure.

- Presence of protein in the urine (sign of kidney problems).

- Swelling in the face.

- Weight gain.

- Headaches.

Preeclampsia can rapidly progress to eclampsia, a serious condition that can even lead to risk to life. Women with signs of preeclampsia should have continuous and close medical monitoring. Sometimes bed rest is recommended and even hospitalization. If the doctor deems it appropriate, it may be advisable to induce labor or perform a cesarean section.

Certain activities or routines will help the expectant mother to control hypertension in pregnancy:

- Do physical exercises or moderate sport for pregnant women on a regular basis and walking every day.

- Control stress with relaxation or gymnastics methods such as yoga or Pilates.

- Eat a diet rich in potassium as it helps to eliminate excess salt.

- Take foods rich in omega3 fatty acids, magnesium and calcium. They are beneficial nutrients to control tension.

- Limit the use of salt in meals.

  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol.
