Have you ever heard of intrauterine pregnancy (which is nothing other than normal pregnancy), or an ectopic pregnancy (when the embryo implants outside the uterus). But there are more types of possible pregnancies.

We explain what are all the possible pregnancies that exist and what are the characteristics of each one of them.

Ideally, the pregnancy should be a normal pregnancy. We understand by normal the pregnancy whose conception has taken place in the indicated place (the meeting between ovum and sperm occurs in the fallopian tubes) and whose embryo, after conception, is located in the correct place (that is, the uterus) . However, there are other possible pregnancies, with their corresponding complications. We tell you what are all the possible pregnancies that can occur:

  1. Intrauterine pregnancy: It is the majority pregnancy. The embryo, once the egg and sperm unite in the fallopian tubes, will grow in the uterus, a safe place where, once successfully implanted, it can develop, in principle, without complications. The baby will be fed thanks to the placenta and through the umbilical cord and if all goes well, it will be able to be born at approximately 40 weeks after conception. This pregnancy is usually divided into three trimesters.
  2. Twin pregnancy: It is also known as a multiple pregnancy. It can be produced in two ways: several sperm fertilize more than one ovum, for which several zygotes will be created, each with its corresponding placenta (which will cause twin brothers) or because a sperm fertilized an ovum that doubled when divide, and more than one zygote will share the placenta and amniotic sac (resulting in twin brothers).
  3. Ectopic pregnancy: In this case, the egg and sperm unite and a zygote is created, but after fertilization, the embryo does not implant in the uterus, but normally, in the same fallopian tubes, or in an ovary or the area of the cervix or cervix. It is serious, and after detection, curettage should be performed if miscarriage has not yet occurred. This type of pregnancy is unfeasible, and can endanger the life of the mother. Usually there are some symptoms that can alert the mother that her pregnancy may be ectopic: severe abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, cramps and severe dizziness. But don't be alarmed, if you have an ectopic pregnancy, you can get pregnant again through an intrauterine pregnancy. It doesn't mean that you can't do it. Three months after your curettage, you can try again.
  4. Molar pregnancy: This type of pregnancy is very dangerous. Its technical name is hydatidiform mole. It occurs when the ovum is fertilized incorrectly and the placenta grows excessively, forming several cysts. When the placenta develops abnormally but there is also no embryo, it is known as a complete molar pregnancy. The treatment is none other than the provocation of a dilation to carry out a curettage. It is a very dangerous pregnancy for the mother, and it should also be observed in the following 12 months, to observe that nothing of the abnormal tissue has remained, which could lead to a tumor.
  5. Intra-abdominal pregnancy: This type of pregnancies only occurs if a cesarean section has been performed previously. The scar may have weakened the area and ruptured, causing an opening where the fetus descends into the abdominal area. Depending on the week of gestation, the pregnancy may continue or stop.
  6. Risk pregnancy: There are many possible risk pregnancies. It may be because of the woman's age, because it is a multiple pregnancy with certain characteristics, because the mother suffers from gestational diabetes, because the mother suffers from some delicate disease ...

In all these cases, you may feel the most common pregnancy symptoms (nausea, headache, swelling in the belly, increased urge to urinate ...) and yet you do not know if the pregnancy is normal or not. You will only know after the first review with the gynecologist.
