It seems that more and more babies are born with low weight (less than 2.5 kg.) Or very low (less than 1.5 kg). IUGR limits the overall growth of the baby's body and organs.

Babies with IUGR may have problems at birth such as hypoxia (low oxygen level), low Apgar score, breathing difficulties due to meconium aspiration or hypoglycemia. Severe IUGR can lead to even fetal death or growth problems in the longer term.

Newborns who have suffered from this delay during pregnancy may appear pale and undernourished, they are thin, with large eyes, and dry skin. This especially occurs when the low weight is not due to being born prematurely, but to an incorrect growth of the baby during pregnancy.

Today it is possible to prevent this growth deficit in the fetus, provided that there is adequate care during pregnancy and an early diagnosis. Some of the factors that can motivate the correct development and growth of the baby in the womb are:

- Maternal causes: chronic diseases, high blood pressure, malnutrition, anemia, drug addiction, alcoholism or smoking.

- Placental, uterine or pregnancy problems: placental abruption, infections of tissues around the fetus, poor blood flow. When there is not enough blood flow through the placenta, the fetus only receives low amounts of oxygen. This can decrease the heart rate of the fetus putting it at high risk.

- Problems in the development of the baby: chromosomal abnormalities, congenital defects, multiple gestation or infections.

- Inadequate care that start from an incorrect or deficient diet, stress, the mother's age (under 17 and over 35) and the lack of prenatal care can also pose a risk.

Finding the cause and remedying as soon as possible will prevent or greatly reduce the problem of this growth retardation. The early diagnosis of IUGR allows specialists to apply treatments that include bed rest, a high protein or higher calorie diet, or medication to restore proper placental circulation.
