Children go through a very important stage in their development in which, through Imitation games, have the opportunity to learn and master the skills necessary to function in society. From a very young age, they imitate all the figures in their environment: parents, uncles, grandparents, teachers, caregivers, etc. which will benefit the development of the cognitive area of ​​the little ones. And the best way to acquire skills and abilities by imitation is through play.

1. Before 2 years

Throughout the sensorimotor period, that is, from birth to approximately 2 years, children improve their ability to imitate through language and play while its reference model is present. Thus:

- They try to imitate the words with which adults address the child. Slowly they will expand the vocabulary and internalize all the words you hear on a daily basis.

- We can also see how the little ones they start to make gestures that take us to the anteroom of the symbolic game such as, for example, 'talking on the cell phone', combing hair, taking things out of the bag ...

- In this process of learning and playing through imitation, the emotional state of the referring model, that is, the one they imitate, is very important. - Day-to-day actions such as making the bed, getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating with cutlery are routines that the child will try to imitate within their possibilities.

2. From 2 years old

As the child grows, as the end of the sensorimotor period approaches, the so-called 'delayed imitation' appears, in which the child stops directly imitating the referent. That is to say, imitation appears when the one it imitates is absent and is sustained based on an internal mental model different from the meaning it originally had.

With deferred imitation the game shared with the referring figure appears. This type of game is essential so that the game by imitation is given individually and can be given from 12 months onwards. In some cases, the appearance of a pre-symbolic game is possible.

As the child gets older, he gains skills and has the ability to give the game more complexity. It will be from the age of 2 when he will start playing in a group and when imitation play becomes something more evolved: symbolic play.

This type of imitation games will serve as a basis to improve the abilities and skills that will help children evolve towards a more complex game such as symbolic. This will be decisive in the process of socialization of the little ones.
